Can More RAM Help Speed Up My Computer?

RAM or random access memory is the working memory of your computer. To give you a better idea of what this means think about this analogy that I’ve seen used several times: If your computer is an office your hard drive would be the filing cabinets where you store most of your records and your desk top would the RAM where you have the records you are going to use right now. So if RAM is your working area and that area is too small then you have to start placing some paper and files on chairs, the floor, etc. And as you need them they are harder to find and thus slows you down. All the different types of malware or malicious software can attack our computers. They attack the workings of the PC and also seek information that it can steal and sell to third parties for profit. We must be diligent in protecting our identity today.

When your computer boots up it will most likely start up several programs that you really don’t need to be running. You can check your computers start up programs by going to Start button and then typing into the search box “msconfig”. Click on MSConfig and it will bring up a box similar to the one above. Notice on this computer how many programs were once running from when the computer started that have now been disabled.

A word of caution – don’t turn anything off that might keep the computer from starting or running. You’ll notice a check box for not showing any Microsoft application.. it would be wise to click that. But programs such as the IPod Service can be stopped at startup and when you need to sync you open the IPod Service program at that time just like Word, Excel, etc.

A lot of programs want to start up and connect to the Internet to check for updates. This is very common and some will do it without asking for your permission.. it’s just set that way when you install the program. If you have 30 programs all starting at the PC’s boot up it will overload most any processor. The same is true at shutdown since each program has to log off.
